Port Perry is a small community in Durham Region, Ontario. As part of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), it’s located about 24.1 km north of Oshawa and about 77.5 km northeast of Toronto. Situated on the shore of Lake Scugog, one of the largest manmade lakes in Ontario, the town is the administrative centre of the Scugog Township.

Port Perry serves as the commercial hub for the people of the surrounding rural areas. However, many of its residents numbering under 10,000 commute to Oshawa, Toronto and other areas of the GTA for work on a daily basis. Homes for sale in Port Perry mostly consist of single-family homes, condos and lofts, but there are also commercial buildings.

History of Port Perry:

The area that is known as Port Perry today was originally a Native American village called Scugog. The first European to settle there was Reuben Crandell, a United Empire Loyalist, who arrived in 1821. The original home built by the Crandells in what is now King Street is still standing and occupied. The area was, however, named after Peter Perry who in 1848 laid out village lots on the site of the former native village.

Named Port Perry in 1852, the area was incorporated as a village in 1871. The arrival of the railway in 1872 transformed the village and turned into the commercial hub of the area, reducing its rival towns Prince Albert and Manchester being in the suburbs. In 1974, the town was amalgamated with the townships of Cartwright, Reach and Scugog to create the Township of Scuggog.
